The development objective of the Ibadan Urban Flood Management Project for Nigeria is to improve the city of Ibadan's flood resilience by: (i) strengthening risk identification and response; and (ii) undertaking flood risk mitigation and urban drainage improvements in priority and targeted project sites. Negative impacts and mitigation measures include: (1) developing communications and stakeholder engagement strategy to clear the negative perception about the project; (2) implementing erosion control measures such as water bars, gabions, straw bales, and re-vegetation; (3) ensuring that solid waste is handled in an adequate manner; (4) ensuring that wastewater from cleaning of equipment and other civil works is not disposed of in water bodies instead it should be collected and treated; (5) providing breathing protection masks for employees and other task-specific personal protective equipment (PPE); (6) identifying sensitive areas in order to protect surface water and preventing non-point source pollution; (7) providing mobile toilet facilities; and (8) ensuring that workers are provided with health and safety equipment such as high visibility vest, helmets, earplugs, safety glasses, and safety boots and, stress on the need to use them always.
